With the rise of the simplistic/minimalistic movement monochromatic art has become increasingly popular. It promotes and influences the art of simple clean living by stripping art down to its fundamental features.

The term “Minimalist Art” was coined in 1929, but, the movement entered the mainstream during the 1960s and 1970s, when primary colors and works by pioneers such as Yves Klein were favored. While Klein is iconic for his use of blue, his pieces among other notable artists of the period ushered in a revival of the minimalist perspective in the art world.

Pablo Picasso decided to approach minimalism through his use of black and white, in one of his most popular paintings entitled, “Guernica”, which was a return to the purity of balancing light and dark. Picasso, who often worked in vibrant colors, appreciated the value of monochromatic art and utilized the absence of color as a tool to inject new meaning into his work. Today, many homeowners and corporations are attracted to pieces that feature minimalist artwork with muted color palettes as they can provide any space with a modern and clean appeal.
